Why is it that people abbreviate their first name initials?

A lot of times the real names will be either too unwieldy or too bland to be publishable; the initials will ring better. J.K. Rowling did it because she didn't want to reveal her gender as an author, in the hopes that kids of both genders would buy her books -- that's an old habit, and hopefully outdated by now, but perhaps not necessarily so.
