I have a quick question?

my 5hp briggs and stratton yesterday took forever to start. when it finally did i let it warm up when i drove it for about 30 seconds it ran bad, backfired, and died. it started back up did the same thing. then that repeated about 4 times then it ran fine the rest of the day. what was happening and how do i fix it?
