Is anyone else confused about public schooling?

So I've been home schooled up until now, (9th grade high school), and everything seems to be so different. For instance, we went to the library to get a book to read and write a report on; I chose Finnegan's Wake, but my teacher made me put the book back telling me, "Get something more on your own reading level, that book is too mature for you!" What?! How am I supposed to learn if I don't challenge myself? And in history we were going over WW2 and everyone thought that General Patton was on the Nazis side!! Is it just me? Should I transfer schools? I don't mean to be giving public schools a bad name, I think it's just this one school however. Please, advice?
